Celebrating Them

What do you do to celebrate the accomplishments of your partner?

My husband worked very hard to get a certification he needed to advance in his career.  I was so proud of all the work he put into getting this certification.  We celebrated with a family dinner at our favorite restaurant.  I told him how proud I was and made a big deal of his achievements.

A few years later, he passed a certification received by only 10,000 people in the entire world.  We had a low-key celebration at home with just the two of us.  Again I told him how proud I was of his achievements.  I made a big deal out of it (because it really is a big deal.)

I asked my husband about the way we celebrated both accomplishments.  He told me he appreciated the family dinner at our favorite restaurant.  But, the low-key celebration made him feel better because the entire evening was all about him.  He enjoyed getting to choose the activities, the food, and the people that celebrated him.

When you are celebrating someone else’s achievements, it’s important to make sure to do the things they like to do.  The celebration is about them so it only makes sense to celebrate by doing the things they like to do.
